How to apply for the Portuguese Electronic Passport?
The application for the Portuguese Electronic Passport is simple and fast, as the citizen is just required to present him/herself in person in the Civilian Governments and Governments of the Autonomous Regions or in the information desks of such entities located in the "Lojas do Cidadão" (civil assistance centres). If living abroad, the application for the passport must be presented to the Portuguese consular authority in the area of residence.
What do you need to apply for the Portuguese Electronic Passport?
The applicant, independently of his/her age, must present a valid Portuguese identity card. The process is initiated by providing proof of identity, from which the biographical data is obtained by consulting the database. Currently, no photographs are required, although the presence of the applicant is mandatory, as the photograph is taken in-site with specific equipment. A normalized face image, fingerprints and the holder's signature are collected from a data-gathering station. The holder decides how the passport will be delivered and makes the payments due in cash or using payment card.
Delivery process of the Portuguese Electronic Passport
The time of delivery of the passport is 6 working days, counting from the acceptance of the application. In case of urgency - if requested by the holder - an expedited service is also available, subject to the applicable urgency fees. The passport may be hand delivered in the place it was requested or may be sent to its holder via post deliverers, if so requested.
